Start-ups need support, Smith says
The path of an entrepreneur is never simple or easy.
Marisa Smith majored in music in college, did computer tech work for the engineering school at the University of Michigan, and started a company that sold her own brand of software to hospitals.
Then the Great Recession happened, and contracts dried up. Her company, the Whole Brain Group, was in danger of fizzling.
"Then we decided that we had had so much fun marketing our own product that we would try doing that for other companies," Smith, 39, said recently. "So we talked to people we knew and said, 'Hey, can we do a website for you?' "
